© flattop341We here at the Plastic Surgery Weblog cannot stress enough the importance of doing exhaustive research before settling on any type of plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery, one of the two types of plastic surgery (the other being reconstructive surgery), is purely elective surgery.
When choosing to undergo elective surgery you should remember that you are risking what may be an otherwise healthy body for an aesthetic result, the outcome of which is ultimately unknown and which may adversely affect your overall health.
Nonetheless, you may decide that the statistics bear out the risks, and that you will achieve a better quality of life overall, providing your operation meets expectations.
One of the best places to start your research is the website of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, which includes an exhaustive list of possible risks and complications from arm lift surgery (among many other types of cosmetic surgery), including some of the following:
• Unfavorable scarring
• Bleeding (hematoma)
• Infection
• Fluid accumulation
• Anesthesia risks
• Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
It's always important to follow your surgeon's instructions for post operative care. Often the key to a speedy recovery is taking the time to make sure you do everything within your power to minimize possibility of injury or infection to the site.
If you notice any chest pain, shortness of breath, unexpected or excessive bleeding or unusual heart beats, you should contact your doctor immediately, as this can be an indication of one or more of the above complications.
Many people have unexpected reactions to anesthesia. While this may be temporary, it's always a good idea to find out for sure by consulting a medical professional. And, as with any surgery, it's imperative that you do your research, make sure you surgeon is properly certified, and know what to expect from this cosmetic plastic surgery procedure.
